What internet speed do you need for streaming?

Streaming is bandwidth-hungry but forgiving of latency. The key questions are what quality you want and how many streams run at once.

Typical requirements per stream

Services publish slightly different recommendations, and quality adapts to your connection, but these are common figures.

  • SD: about 3 Mbps
  • HD (1080p): about 5 to 8 Mbps
  • 4K: about 15 to 25 Mbps

Multiply by your household

Three people each watching a 4K stream need roughly 45 to 75 Mbps for video alone, before browsing and calls. Leave headroom of at least 30 percent.

Steady beats peak

Streaming players buffer ahead, so short dips are hidden, but a connection that repeatedly falls low will cause quality drops and pauses. WiFi Ping's throughput stability shows whether your speed holds steady, which matters more for streaming than the peak number.

If your streams buffer

Test at the time it happens. Slow evenings point to congestion, while problems only on one device point to Wi-Fi or the device. Moving the router or using a cable to the TV often solves it.
